Augmentative Communication

Come to The Communication Station.....

We will incorporate alternative and augmentative communication (AAC) into your child’s session.

What is AAC?

Alternative and augmentative communication (AAC) is a term used to describe a number of communication (voice output) devices which will assist your child to fully participate in an interactive environment; socially, academically, in a work environment, etc.

What types of children does it help?

Children with communication disabilities; autism, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, traumatic brain injury

How does an SLP who is trained in AAC incorporate the technique into their speech and language therapy?

As with all approaches used in our clinic, AAC will be used in conjunction with multiple approaches to make your child reach his or her optimal potential. The AAC systems focus on making your child more interactive in their environment by giving them a voice of their own. It can be paired with goals related to speech and language skills. There is evidence to show that AAC devices encourage more spoken language as it is a constant model for them.

How will parents be able to carryover techniques at home and in other settings?

Trained SLPs in AAC systems will educate parents about their child’s goals. Parents will be given simple instructions in how to use manipulate the device in order for carryover to be in the home.

What is needed to train other professionals in the child’s environment?

We provide training at the child’s school to assist with utilizing this device.
