Aspergers
What is Asperger's Disorder?
As a part of the Autistic Spectrum Disorder, this disorder is characterized
by social isolation and eccentric behavior in a child. Their
social impairments occur when communicating with others and with understanding
non-verbal interactions. Their speech is peculiar due to inflection
abnormalities and a repetitive pattern (talking on an on about a topic
that others may not be interested in). They usually have a circumscribed
interest which is spoken about excessively and do not take the listener’s
actions or interest into account. Examples of interest include; door
knobs, trains, cars, meteorology, astronomy or history.
How can Speech Pathologists benefit this child?
An experienced SLP who has experience in this area can often recognize
the inconspicuous innuendoes that this type of child needs assistance
with. This includes but is not limited to semantic pragmatic
aspects of communication such as; personal space while speaking,
voice inflection (mean voice verses nice voice), turn taking with the
give and take of a conversational exchange, use a good listening position,
staying on topic, when to stay on topic, when to change
topics, when to ask questions (when there is a break in the
conversation) concerning others, how to respond to others’ responses,
problem solving social scenarios, empathy, thinking about others, theory
of mind, how to respond to teasing and bullying and how to understand
and use non verbal excommunication.
